Has Wickedness Made You Ill Lately?
Lot was Abraham's nephew. If you remember, God spared his life and family by rescuing them from the wicked city of Sodom before God destroyed it. The Apostle Peter refers to Lot as "righteous" and I had a real problem with that because Lot offered his two daughters to a group of men that were going to rape them. He bartered with the two angels who told him to flee to the mountains but he wanted to just go to a nearby town. Then later his daughters get him drunk and he gets them both pregnant. (Read about Lot in Genesis 19)
Read what Peter says.... 2 Peter 2:7-8 and if He rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men 8 (for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds), So having read about the life of Lot I was really wondering how Peter would describe him as righteous. But Peter tells us why he was considered righteous, his soul was oppressed and tormented by the wickedness of the Sodomites. He may have had his own imperfections and flaws but his heart and soul was tender to God and his holiness and therefore was grieved by the wickedness around him.
Are you grieved, tormented and oppressed by the wickedness that is prevalent in our culture? When was the last time you expressed or experienced godly sorrow or anger for blatant acts of immorality? It is a distinguishing quality of the righteous. You cannot spend time in the presence of a holy God and not be affected by the wickedness on display everywhere you turn. If your soul hasn't been tormented by the lawless deeds of wicked people then it's time for a heart check. You may have drifted far from the heart of God if the blatant immorality that's defining our times has little or no effect on your emotions. Righteousness is a position that God places us in. Righteousness is obeying God. A clear and defining mark of Righteousness is being tormented in our spirit when evil men glory in their wickedness.
