You are a Holy Priest Unto God
Do you know you don't have to wait until your church serves communion to participate in this powerful and beautiful expression of worship? Do you also know you don't have to have a pastor or priest to serve you? Well, technically, you do need a priest, but that's where YOU come in! The Bible tells us when Christ saves us he makes us His holy priests.
Here are two examples the Apostle Peter gives us:
1 Peter 2:5 And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God.
1 Peter 2:9 But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
The Apostle John also gives us two more examples of our status as priests belonging to God:
Revelation 1:6 He has made us a Kingdom of priests for God his Father. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.
Rev 5:9-10 And they sang a new song with these words: “You are worthy to take the scroll and break its seals and open it. For you were slaughtered, and your blood has ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. (10) And you have caused them to become a Kingdom of priests for our God. And they will reign on the earth.”
So your first lesson as a priest is to learn how to perform communion. The following is a five-step guideline to get the most from your communion.
5 Steps to Celebrate Communion in Your Home
Before you begin:
-Set a time and place.
-Get the bread and juice. (Any grape juice and type of bread or cracker will do)
Your Communion Time
Sing and/or play your favorite worship song.
From your Bible read Luke 22: 7-20. (Extra: 1 Cor. 11:23-32)
Reflect on the following:
Past: Be Thankful
Communion is a time to look back and ponder the suffering and price Jesus paid for our salvation. It is a time to be thankful that he left heaven for us, he became a man, and suffered death, shed his blood for our sins so we wouldn’t have to.
Present: Be Honest
Communion is a time to look within our heart and to examine our relationship with our Lord. Are their any sins we need to confess or conflicts with people that needs restored? Tell Jesus you’re sorry and ask him to forgive your sins--that’s what repentance means. Be honest and sincere with Jesus.
When you are ready, eat the bread first and then drink the juice.
Future: Be Happy
Communion is also a time to look ahead and remember Jesus said he was coming back again. Are we ready for that? This is a time to rejoice that one day we will be with Jesus forever.
5. Close in a simple prayer of gratitude.
