Chapter 19
This chapter covers the scourging, crucifixion, and burial of the body of Christ. For more details, it is also found in Matthew 27, Mark 15, and Luke 23. As you read embrace the suffering Christ endured to save us from our sins.
Chapter 20
The empty tomb and first appearances of the resurrected Lord! And why did John write this Gospel?
(20:31) but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that by believing you may have life in His name.
Do you believe?
Chapter 21
Jesus continues to show himself to his disciples, this time at the Sea of Galilee. There is a special redemption of Peter found in verses 15-17. Here Jesus asks Peter three times, "Do you love me?" Remember how Peter had denied Jesus three times after he was arrested? Peter was likely still grieved and bearing the guilt from denying his Lord. In a way only Jesus can do, he provided a way for Peter to reaffirm his love for him, for himself, and in the company of the disciples. Peter needed the assurance that Jesus had forgiven him and was holding no resentment. He needed to know Jesus had not discarded him, that he had not disqualified himself from being a disciple of Christ. Jesus affirmed his purpose and plan for Peter had not changed.
